Energy Star Strongly Recommends Controlling Power Settings
ENERGY STAR was introduced in 1992 by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) "to identify and promote energy-efficient products to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Computers and monitors were the first labeled products." Its mission is to deliver technical information and tools to assist organizations and consumers in choosing energy-efficient solutions and best management practices.

According to the Energy Star website, "enabling monitor power management could save large organizations approximately 200,000 kWh per year for every 1,000 monitors. This amounts to $17,000 per year saved at 8.5 cents/kWh, enough energy to power 230 households for one month [and] CO2 reductions equivalent to preventing the emissions from 28 cars or planting 2 million square feet of trees."

Many organizations pay well in excess of 8.5 cents/kWh and thus have the potential for even greater savings, especially when savings from CPU power settings are also considered.
